Can the 2nd-level Alter Self spell make the 1st-level Disguise Self spell obsolete, either by perfectly replicating the spell's effects or by providing wholly superior effects?

Specifically, I'm asking this question because the Warlock gets two different invocations: one that allows at-will usage of Disguise Self Mask of Many Facesand one that allows at-will usage of Alter Self Master of Myriad Forms.

The Warlock can also trade old obsolete invocations for different ones during a level-up. Is it advantageous to trade the Disguise Self invocation for the Alter Self invocation? One of the major points of Disguise Self is that it can not only alter your appearance via illusionbut your clothing and equipment as well.

It's important to note the inverse of this: Alter Self does not specify that it modifies your clothing or equipment. This means that, depending on how severe your alterations are, you may no longer fit into your armor and your clothing may clearly no longer fit you, depending on how simulationist your DM is on the topic.

In most campaigns, you can use or wear any equipment that you find on your adventures, within the bounds of common sense. The DM can impose more realism. Using this variant, when adventurers find armor, clothing, and similar items that are made to be worn, they might need to visit an armorsmith, tailor, leatherworker, or similar expert to make the item wearable.

The cost for such work varies from 10 to 40 percent of the market price of the item. Even if your equipment does fit you after the effects of the spell, any well known gear or accessories may still let you be identified, especially if they're more well known then your actual physical attributes. One of them is that both Alter Self and Disguise Self can be used at the same time, to enhance the illusion with actual physical changes underneath it.

Do note that this is only possible because Disguise Self does not require concentration, which is another point in its favor over Alter Selfwhich does. This means Alter Self can fail earlier than intended especially in combat or while under stresswhile Disguise Self will last the duration under most conditions, and still allows you to cast other concentration spells. Alter Self actually changes your height, while Disguise Self only creates the illusion of a height change, keeping you your usual size.

This might matter if your DM actually cares about character height in certain situations rather than just your size.

For example, with Alter Selfyou could change the shortest possible dwarf into the tallest possible goliath, whereas with Disguise Selfyou could make a dwarf appear to be a halfling so long as you're not trying to change your height by more than a foot in doing so.

Overall, I'd probably rate Alter Self better than Disguise Self in some combination of the following situations:. In other situations, there is a chance Disguise Self may be the more appropriate spell.

In a situation requiring an emergency drastic appearance change clothes, size, and allfor example, I would much prefer Disguise Self as my option.

Skin blemishes, scars, facial hair, hair color, complexion, and gender changes were all possible. Disguise self did not disguise the caster's voice nor change the audible properties of armor or equipment.

Chain mail could be made to look like a leather jerkinbut it would still sound like chain mail when the caster moved. Likewise, the tactile properties of materials were not altered. If someone slapped you on the back, they would feel chain mail and not leather. The spell also did not give the caster any new abilities or knowledge of the mannerisms of the chosen form.

Thread Tools Show Printable Version. Disguise Self: A camouflage spell? I had an epiphany. Alter self says you can make yourself look like whatever you like as long as it has the same basic stucture. So could you not camouflage yourself to look like stones or dirt, grass, trees and leaves?? I feel like this is an easy source of stealth advantage for a first level spell slot and has been overlooked because the spell SUGGESTS you disguise yourself to look like someone else.

So, yeah, pretty easily allows for camouflage. By RAW you can. You can go as far ar describe that you are wearing an armor, and it's texture looks like stone, or a custum made entirelly of leaves. You can even add a mask with the same texture, gloves, and pretty much all you want. You can go as far as make it appear as if it has caught fire.

Now, if the DM decides you can or not is entirelly up to him, and if it fits his campain. I have seen DMs managing a world of low magic, who were not confortable with people walking around on fire I personally like to allow creative thinking, so, if you want a glove made of lightning and an indigo magical aura around you, by all means I allow it
